The Problem
Every community deserves to be safe. Flock builds the technology that makes that real: last year we supported over 1 million criminal investigations and helped locate more than 10,000 missing people. We're building the impossible with over $1B in funding, and the expectations are high on purpose. If you want a role where the stakes are real and the pace matches (with incredibly supportive, smart colleagues in the foxhole with you), you’ve come to the right place.
We’re looking for a seasoned, pressure tested strategic communications leader to own our Washington DC + policy narrative. We need someone who knows the reporters, understands how congressional actions become media stories, and can help us prepare before those stories land.
This would complement our existing communications operation and government affairs team. Good strategic judgment matters, but this needs to be a hands-on role. Someone who can advise us, pick up the phone, draft a response, and carry the work through.
What You'll Own
Build relationships with Beltway reporters. Own regular outreach to relevant reporters at POLITICO, Semafor, Axios, Puck, and Punchbowl, particularly as we prepare for Flock to become a hot-button congressional issue. Get beyond introductions. Learn what they are working on, answer substantive questions, and make sure they understand the company, our products, and our safeguards.
Prepare for congressional scrutiny. Work with government affairs and legal to identify likely lines of questioning and build answers around them. Have facts, messages, and a response process ready before a letter lands or a reporter calls.
Connect policy developments to communications. Understand which proposals and congressional actions could affect the business or generate coverage. Turn that into clear guidance for leadership, reporter outreach, and executive preparation.
Handle the daily execution. Draft responses, brief reporters, prepare executives, follow up, and stay on top of developing stories. The experienced person we hire needs to be the person doing the work.
Collaborate closely with Government Affairs and Legal. Alignment is always your north star. Bringing groups and teams together internally and externally to serve one mission: informed, clear legislation around LPR and drone technology that creates safer communities.
You will report into the VP of Communications. This role is a senior, high visibility individual contributor role - you will manage external resources and agencies to help you. You will also potentially flex into non-DC focused work, including crisis, corporate, and product communications – as needed.
What This Role is Not
Not a pure corporate mouthpiece: We don't do fluff or overly polished corporate speak; you must deliver clear, transparent, and high-impact messaging.
Not a passive reactive role: You won't just respond to press inquiries; you are expected to aggressively shape the narrative before others write it for us.
Not a hands-off delegate-only position: We operate with a high bias for action; you will write, strategize, and execute alongside your team. You will also be expected to grow and nurture your team to have strong judgment when working in high stakes environments with Tier 1 media.
What You Bring
Must-Have: 8-10 years of communications, media relations, or PR leadership experience, with a heavy focus on DC, congressional issues + hearings, and policy communications. Must also be able to flex into having strong judgment and leadership skills across various and corporate issues, as well.
Must-Have: Strong executive presence with experience media training and advising C-suite leaders.
Must-Have: Strong existing relationships with DC and Beltway press. If not, you’re scrappy and hungry and willing to find ways in with editors, reporters, and have a muscle for quickly building those relationships.
Compensation
In this role, you'll receive a starting salary between $182,300 and $243,000 as well as Flock Stock Options. Flock does not offer performance bonuses. Base salary is determined by job-related experience, education/training, as well as market indicators. Your recruiter will discuss this in depth with you during our first chat.
