Job Overview:
The Manager, Tax Operations & Compliance, will serve as the Company’s primary internal resource for day-to-day tax operations, compliance coordination, and tax-related business support. This is a hands-on individual contributor role that will partner closely with Accounting, Finance, Sales, Product, Operations, and external tax advisors. The Manager, Tax Operations & Compliance, will own recurring tax processes, maintain the Company’s tax compliance infrastructure, identify emerging risks, and provide practical tax guidance as the Company introduces new products, channels, pricing models, and international activities.
Responsibilities:
- Own the Company’s day-to-day tax function and comprehensive compliance calendar, ensuring timely and accurate filings, payments, registrations, supporting data, and documentation. Serve as the primary internal liaison with PwC, Taxually, and other external tax advisors.
- Manage multistate indirect tax compliance, including preparing applicable gross receipts, excise, and business tax returns and providing, validating, and reconciling sales tax and telecommunications tax data used in outsourced filings.
- Maintain the Company’s state nexus and filing-obligation profile using sales, employee, payroll, inventory, Amazon FBA, 3PL, property, and other operational data.
- Coordinate new registrations and changes in filing requirements as the business footprint evolves.
Strengthen transaction-tax processes and controls, including use tax compliance, tax- exemption certificate administration, customer invoice testing, and validation of tax configurations across ERP, subscription, e-commerce, and marketplace systems. - Partner with Sales, Product, Finance, Technology, and Operations to evaluate the tax implications of new products, channels, pricing models, and customer arrangements, including hardware, subscription, connectivity, support, and enterprise offerings.
- Coordinate federal, state, and local income and franchise tax compliance with PwC, including data collection, workpaper preparation, return review, extensions, estimated payments, tax payments, tax-account reconciliations, and provision support.
- Coordinate international and cross-border tax matters, including U.S.-Canada treaty positions, Canadian GST/HST and import-tax recovery, Canadian telecommunications taxes, and other applicable international compliance requirements.
- Manage tax notices, examinations, and information requests by researching issues, assembling supporting documentation, coordinating with external advisors, and tracking matters through resolution.
- Oversee ancillary compliance matters, including Secretary of State filings, business licenses, personal property tax, FBAR reporting, Forms W-9 and 1099, unclaimed property, and other information-reporting requirements.
- Support tax-related legal entity records, intercompany and transfer-pricing matters, owner or equity-holder tax distributions and reporting, and acquisition, restructuring, purchase accounting, R&D credit, Section 174, customs, and other tax projects as applicable.
- Monitor relevant tax developments, communicate potential business impacts, and develop policies, controls, documentation, and process improvements that increase the accuracy, efficiency, and scalability of the Company’s tax function.
Requirements:
- Six or more years of progressive corporate tax or public accounting experience.
- Strong multistate indirect-tax and general tax-operations experience.
- Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or taxation.
- CPA or master’s in taxation preferred but not required.
- Experience with e-commerce, subscription services, connected products or telecommunications, multistate inventory, and Canadian operations strongly preferred.
- Experience coordinating outsourced compliance providers and converting operational data into filing-ready tax information.
- NetSuite and tax-compliance platform experience preferred.
