About the Team

The Merchant is at the core of DoorDash. The Merchant Team, one of the largest in the company, powers many facets of our business and is one of the primary drivers of growth and revenue. On the Merchant Strategy & Ops team, our mission is to have best-in class restaurant selection, build cutting edge services for our merchants to grow their business, and help our partners operate seamlessly.

About the Role

We are looking for an operator with a strong bias to action who loves using data and getting creative to solve problems. You’ll join our Merchant Selection team, where we operate relentlessly towards ensuring we strike the best possible deals with our merchants, to enable us to grow our restaurant selection in a sustainable manner.

Selection’s north star is simply to ensure we have the best & most restaurant offering in each neighbourhood we operate in. It sounds simple enough…but of course in practice it’s much more complicated than that.

Retention is part of Selection because we believe that signing a merchant isn’t enough. It all means nothing if we churn the merchant a few months later (either poached by a competitor to go exclusive, or the merchant has had a bad experience and chooses to leave…both are equally bad). Since selection is measured on all merchants on the platform meaning we need to acquire + retain as many merchants as possible. It’s also our job to make sure that we’re retaining merchants in a way that not only aligns with our business priorities, but in a way that we can afford.

Your role here is to critically analyze new and existing partnerships and help us sign/retain our partners either proactively or reactively (i.e., a churn threat or a competitor exclusivity takeover). To do so, you’ll get deep in the data, evaluate renegotiation deals and determine if the requested terms are financially feasible. We need to create the right amount of ‘friction’ to push for the best possible deal. Sometimes we have to hold firm and reject deals, other times we accept deals that may fall outside our WTP. We don’t always get it right, because there is both a science (financial modeling) and an art (intel from the field or strategic decisions) to deal desk and it really just takes multiple reps to get comfortable owning these approvals.

You’re excited about this opportunity because you will…
